Carwyn (Ngāti Kahungungu) is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law at Victoria University of Wellington. He holds a PhD from the University of Victoria, British Columbia. His primary research interests relate to the Treaty of Waitangi and Indigenous legal traditions and has published numerous articles on these topics. He is the author of New Treath, New Tradition – Reconciling New Zealand and Māori Law (UBC Press and VUP, 2018), co-editor of Indigenous Peoples and the State: International Perspectives on the Treaty of Waitangi (Routledge, 2018), and co-editor of the Māori Law Review.
Carwyn was a negotiator for Ngāti Kahungungu ki Te Wairoa in relation to the settlement of their historical claims. He is a meber of Te Uepū Hāpai i te Ora – the Safe and Effective Justice Advisory Group, and the Māori Advisory Committee to the New Zealand Law Commission.
