He Aituā – Dr Apirana Mahuika
Kia hiwa rā, kia hiwa rā
Ka rere tēnei ki te motu
Kua hinga tētahi taonga nō te wao nui a Tāne
ko Takuta Apirana Mahuika
Tēnā koutou katoa,
It is with immense sadness that we have learnt that Dr Apirana Mahuika passed away this morning. He uri nō Ngāti Porou.
Dr Mahuika was a fierce Ngāti Porou leader who touched the lives of many. Some of his many achievements include playing a pivotal role in establishing Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Porou and serving as Chair for many years; he obtained a Master of Arts from Sydney University; he was a licensed interpreter of Te Reo Māori; he received an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from Waikato University and was ordained Anglican Minister. His son Matanuku Mahuika is a member and former Co-President of THRMoA.
Dr Mahuika will be remembered for his significant contribution to not only his iwi Ngāti Porou but to Te Ao Māori.
